Mutawintji means ‘place of green grass and waterholes’. The presence of shelter and water means this idyllic place is home to a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Among the gorges and cliffs are the secrets of an ancient culture. The Park reveals examples of rock carvings, paintings and stencils that provide evidence of aboriginal occupation of the area that dates back more than 8000 years. In September 1998 Mootwingee NP was formally handed back to its traditional owners. Today the area is called by its traditional name, Mutawintji. Start the day tour from the Visitor Information Centre in Broken Hill. The 130km drive from Broken Hill takes in ever-changing landscapes that include the Barrier Ranges, saltbush and blue bush plains as far as the eye can see, mulga and red sand country. Morning tea along the way is enjoyed in the shade of a dry creek bed lined with majestic red gums. A little further on we enter Mutawintji National Park and proceed to the Historic Site. This area is where ceremonies and initiations took place. Listen to the story of Kullawarra, about the creation of Mutawintji in the dreamtime. Then we embark on interpretive bush walks to the Engravings Site and to the Stencils Site. The remnants of fireplaces and stone toolmaking give us an insight into traditional life in the area. After this tour concludes, we enjoy a picnic lunch freshly packed before we start our return back to Broken Hill. The morning tea and lunch stop indicated may vary. We work closely with the Mutawintji Land Council and Mutawintji Heritage Tours where you will experience your own indigenous guide that is trained & accredited by the Local Aboriginal Land Council. 48 hours notice is required for any changes and cancellations (no refunds within 48 hours of booking).
